Never heard of Vespaiolo? That’s OK, we’re here for you. This little-known northern Italian grape gets its name from the vespa (wasp) that savors the sugar from the grapes as they grow on the vines. A nose of juicy citrus, apple blossom, and white peach never fails to entice. Flavors of juicy apple give backbone to a full palate that feels sweet (but isn’t) and make this perfect for richer foods, like risotto, veggie burgers with cheese or Southeast Asian seafood dishes.
In 2002, Mirco and Gloria Gottardi started Contrà Soarda with a desire to create a deeper tie to their native land. Contrà Soarda, which means “hamlet on the slope” grows vines and olive trees with utmost respect for the natural environment. Located just outside the town of Bassano del Grappa, the Contrà Soarda cellar is built inside the hill (in order to minimize any environmental impact). It is an architectural wonder and recipient of many prizes.
